Books

Matthew Bates, Why the Gospel: Living the Good News of Jesus with Purpose (Eerdmans, 2023)

The “good news” of the gospel is that Jesus is King. But why has God issued this royal proclamation? And what role can it play in our everyday lives?

Timothy Keller, Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith (Pengiun Books, 2011)

Keller takes his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity and uses the parable of the prodigal son to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation.

Timothy Keller, King’s Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus (Dutton, 2011)

Drawing from Mark’s gospel, this book explains how Jesus’ identity as king and his purpose in dying on the cross have meaning and significance on a cosmic scale, as well as for the individual.

Timothy Keller, Forgive: Why Should I and How Can I? (Viking, 2022)

Keller shows readers why forgiveness is so important and how to do it, explaining the steps you need to take in order to move on without sacrificing justice or your humanity.

C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters (HarperOne, 2015)

A satirical portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of a highly placed assistant to “Our Father Below,” it an engaging account of temptation – and triumph over it.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones, The Cross: God’s Way of Salvation (Crossway, 1986)

Lloyd-Jones encourages clergy, exhorts believers, and challenges new Christians through his study of the redemptive act of Christ’s crucifixion.

Alistair McGrath, What Was God Doing on the Cross? (Wipf & Stock, 2002)

Why would God choose the cross – an instrument of execution – as the means and symbol of salvation? McGrath argues that the cross is a symbol of hope in the midst of a world of death and suffering.

Scot McKnight, The King Jesus Gospel: The Original Good News Revisited (Zondervan, 2016)

Contemporary evangelicals have reduced the gospel to the message of personal salvation. This book makes a plea for us to recover the old gospel as that which is still new and still fresh.

A thorough look at what the apostle Paul understood about the cross, and what contemporary Christians can learn from him.

Packer analyzes Scripture and the works of early Reformers to defend the truth of Christ’s substitutionary suffering and death, the heart of the Christian gospel.

John Stott. The Cross of Christ (Intervarsity Press, 2021)

With compelling honesty, John Stott confronts readers with the centrality of the cross in God’s redemption of our pain-filled world.

Jeremy Treat, The Atonement: An Introduction (Crossway, 2023)

The atonement is central to Christian theology and essential for following Jesus – Treat explains what Scripture teaches about the atonement and how it impacts one’s daily life.

In our increasingly graceless culture, this books explores the questions “Where can we find the motivation to forgive?” and “How do we learn to forgive when forgiving seems counterintuitive or even futile?”

N.T. Wright, How God Became King: The Forgotten Story of the Gospels (HarperOne, 2016)

N.T. Wright powerfully restores the lost central story of the Scripture: that the coronation of God through the acts of Jesus was the climax of human history.

Philip Yancey, What’s So Amazing About Grace? (Zondervan, 2023)

With powerful stories, rich theology, and practical suggestions, Yancey challenges us to become living answers to a world that desperately needs to know, What's So Amazing About Grace?
